UCT members recognized for their fraternal efforts by the NFCA

UCT is proud to announce that Carolyn Dobschensky, Dianna Loafman, Randy Young and Dianna Wolfe have been recognized by the National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) as Fraternal MVPs (Most Valuable Participants) as part of the organization’s Fraternalists in Action program. The program is a two-pronged initiative to recognize outstanding fraternalists and to educate public officials about the importance of fraternal benefit societies. Click here for details. Randy Young, in fact, was selected as one of the Fraternalists in Action to travel to Washington, D.C., Sept. 19-20, 2006, to meet with his state legislators to be recognized for his fraternal accomplishments and to share his (and UCT's) fraternal story. Dobachensky
Carolyn S. Dobschensky

Carolyn S. Dobschensky of Saginaw, Mich., has been a member of Saginaw, Mich. Council 43 for 24 years. Her membership actually totals 30 years when including the years she spent as part of the Ladies’ Auxiliary. She became a member of UCT in order to learn about leadership and she believes she has achieved that goal by working extensively at the local, Grand and Supreme levels to help advance UCT’s mission.

Carolyn has become involved in a number of community activities through UCT, one of which is volunteering for an annual golf outing that raises funds for a local rescue mission. The most important activity, however, is through Community Village, an assisted living facility in Saginaw. Carolyn serves as president of the annual Strawberry Festival, which raises around $5,000 annually and contributes such "extras" for Community Village’s residents as bowling, color tours, museum visits, theatre outings, lunches and Christmas gifts. The Festival involves 175-200 volunteers from various groups and Saginaw Council 43 sponsors the Food Court, which has about 30 members volunteering each year.

In 2006, Carolyn was awarded the "Volunteer of the Year" plaque from Community Village. Though she appreciates the recognition, she considers the greatest reward to be the good feeling that comes from seeing the Village’s residents engage in activities they wouldn't be able to enjoy if the Strawberry Festival did not take place.

During her time in the Ladies’ Auxiliary, Carolyn received honors at the local, Grand and Supreme levels. She is still active in the Auxiliary Past Supreme Counselors’ Association and currently serves on the May E. Tisdale Educational Trust Fund committee, which awards annual scholarships to the children and grandchildren of UCT members.

Carolyn has served through the line of offices of Saginaw Council 43, earning her Past Counselor honors, and she has served through the Michigan Grand Council’s line of officers, earning her Past Grand Counselor honors. She has worked on most of the council committees at the local level, most importantly at Bingo, which contributes generously to the community. On the Grand level, she was most recently convention chairperson, and she currently holds the position of Grand Promotional Director. She has served on the auditing committee on the Supreme level and chaired the installations for Past Supreme Counselor David McKay and current Supreme Counselor David Piper.

Loafman Dianna Loafman

Dianna has been a member of UCT’s Fort Worth Downtown Council 934, Fort Worth, Texas, for 12 years. She became a member when she applied for and was issued a fraternal insurance policy, but she became a fraternalist when she got involved with her local council and experienced how important fraternalism is to its members and local communities.

Through UCT Dianna has become involved in a number of community activities including supporting and volunteering for the American Cancer Society, Women’s Haven of Tarrant County, the Fort Worth All Church Home, Kids Who Care, and the Arthritis Association. She also supports and volunteers for the Camp Fire Girls and Boys Club, the Ronald McDonald House, and the Camp Bowie Restoration and Historical Cultural District. Other significant fraternal activities Dianna is involved with include volunteering for Junior Golf tournaments, JOIN HANDS DAY events, and the organization’s safety poster contest for people with intellectual disabilities. She is also active in supporting youth sports and youth scholarships. In addition, she currently serves on the board of directors of the Texas Fraternal Congress.

Dianna has served through the line of local council offices, earning her Past Counselor honors. She has also served through the line of offices of the Texas Grand Council and received her Past Grand Counselor honors. In 2003 she was elected to UCT’s Supreme Board of Governors. In 2007 she will become the organization’s first woman Supreme Counselor.

Dianna has received a number of community citations and organizational awards for her fraternal efforts, but considers the greatest reward to be the friendship, fraternalism, service and security that come with being a UCT member.

Loafman Randy C. Young

Randy has been a member of UCT’s Baton Rouge, La. Council 499 for 32 years. UCT is a family heritage for Randy. His father and grandfather were both UCT members. He became active and remains active in the organization in order to help his community and those less fortunate than him. For Randy, UCT is about charity and the importance of volunteerism. He believes that his involvement with UCT has helped him to grow fraternally and socially, has inspired him to increase his charitable activities, and has introduced him to some of the most caring people on the planet.

Through his fraternal activities with UCT, Randy has become involved in a number of community fund-raising activities including raising money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital, the Association of Retarded Citizens, the Baton Rouge Activities Training Center for the Mentally Handicapped, and two Special Olympics bowling teams. He has also been actively involved for years with helping to conduct Easter egg hunts for children, assisting with the organization of Junior Golf tournaments, and visiting nursing home and homebound residents. Most recently, Randy has been involved with relief efforts following the devastating 2005 hurricanes along the Gulf Coast.

Randy has served on every committee of his local council through the years and has served through the line of local council offices, earning his Past Counselor honors. He currently serves as the council’s secretary-treasurer. He has also served through the line of offices of the Mississippi-Louisiana Grand Council and received his Past Grand Counselor honors. On the Supreme level, he has served on numerous committees and is being considered as a future Board of Governors member.

Randy has been publicly recognized for many of his fraternal activities, receiving letters of appreciation and plaques of recognition over the years, but this is not why he is an active fraternalist. He is a fraternalist because he cares.

Loafman Dianna J. Wolfe

Dianna J. Wolfe of Racine, Wis., has been a member of UCT’s Racine, Wis. Council 337 for 11 years. She is a second-generation UCT fraternalist - her father is a Past Supreme Counselor of the organization. Wolfe became involved with UCT because she was impressed with the organization’s dedication to supporting and enriching the lives of people with developmental disabilities and intellectual disabilities. She has continued as an active UCT member because of the positive impact the organization’s fraternal activities have on the lives of less fortunate individuals in her community.

Dianna has become involved in a number of community events through her fraternal activities with UCT. She has been an active volunteer for Special Olympics, assisting with basketball and bowling tournaments as well as track and field meets. She has also participated in numerous special events held for residents at the Wisconsin Center for the Mentally Disabled.

Dianna served as her local council’s secretary-treasurer for six years and has earned her Past Counselor honors for doing so. She has been serving through the line of offices of the Wisconsin Grand Council and is serving as Grand Counselor during 2006-2007. She has also served on several committees on the Supreme level.

Dianna has been publicly recognized for her fraternal activities, including being named Racine UCT’s Woman of the Year, but this is not why she continues to be active as a fraternalist. She remains involved because she sees how fraternalism changes people’s lives and that gives her life greater meaning.
