Fraternalists in Action The National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) recognizes U.S. fraternalists The National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) is composed of almost 10 million Americans - many of whom are UCT members - who selflessly, humbly and anonymously volunteer millions of hours and dollars to help their fellow citizens. The Fraternalists in Action program is the NFCA's effort to recognize hard-working fraternalists and to educate public officials about fraternal benefit societies. Fraternalists in Action program The Fraternalists in Action program serves to recognize and highlight fraternal efforts and accomplishments every week of the year and then again every month in Washington, D.C., seeking to put a face on fraternalism by recognizing a different fraternalist each week. The 76 NFCA member-societies, one of which is UCT, have been divided into five categories according to size. One Fraternal MVP (Most Valuable Participant) from each group is recognized each week on the NFCA Web site and in their society and local media. These honorees are randomly selected from a pool of names sent to the NFCA by member-societies. Each member-society selects its “MVPs” for the year that will, in addition with the honorees from the other societies in the same category, total at least 52 to cover every week of the year. Please keep in mind this is not a competition or award program; it is a recognition program. At the end of each month, one MVP from each of the categories, five in all, will be randomly selected from that month’s weekly selected fraternalists to travel to Washington, D.C., to meet and be recognized by their Members of Congress. The fraternalists whose names are not drawn will be recognized by their state senator and representative, either in the state capitol or at a local council event to which the senator and/or representative will be invited as the featured speaker/attendee. Selecting the weekly honorees UCT’s 2008 MVPs to the NFCA are: Stephen "Steve" Desselles, Baton Rouge, La. Council 499; Robert "Bob" Gruszecki, Salem, Ohio Council 261; Suzanne Rufiange, Tri-City Council 823, Fitchburg, Mass.; Carol Jane Shoope, Bluegrass Council 89, Lexington, Ky.; Richard Sid Toleno, Umpqua-Roseburg Council 887, Roseburg, Ore; and Bertha "Bert" Zovistoski, Troy, N.Y. Counci 403. These individuals were selected based on their proven dedication to fraternalism and UCT, their ability to epitomize the spirit of fraternalism through good works, and their ability to represent UCT as grassroots spokespersons in Washington, D.C. Sid Toleno, in fact, has already been recognized by the NFCA for his fraternal accomplishments. You may contact the Public Relations Department with the information at (800) 848-0123, ext. 130, or at lfisher@uct.org. The Fraternalists in Action program is a unique opportunity to keep fraternalism and fraternalists in front of our federal and state legislators. Watch for UCT’s fraternalists to be spotlighted for their efforts - and learn more about other society’s fraternalists - by visiting the NFCA Web site at www.nfcanet.org. |
