A New Approach to Fraternalism

Posted on Dec 13, 2012 by: UCT

As you can see on our website, UCT is a non-profit financial services membership organization.
It is an unusual business model, but one that has been around since the late 1800’s.  The basis of our non-profit status can be found in section 501 (c) (8) of the Internal Revenue Code, a section outlining what constitutes a “Fraternal Beneficiary Society”.

All 501 (c) (8) organizations have a “fraternal purpose” and provide insurance benefits to their members.  Since our founding in 1888, UCT members have been focused on being good citizens of their local communities.  Volunteering has been a way of life for our members, and the benefits to their home communities have been significant.

The insurance benefits we provide to our members help them by ensuring their financial security.  We
also provide an array of non-insurance benefits, and the networking opportunities and leadership opportunities afforded our members are invaluable.

UCT members are active in local councils throughout North America, and many of those councils have been in existence for over 100 years.  Our first council was formed in Columbus, Ohio in 1888, and Council 1 is still in existence and continuing to give back to the local community.

Our councils have had a traditional way of operating that dates back to our founding, but today with new technology there are more ways to volunteer and support worthy causes.  In addition to our 100+ year old councils, we have councils that are less than 1 year old.

For example, one of our newest councils, Council 2001, is headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona and is focused on helping homeless veterans.  With the ability to meet online, this council can have members from everywhere and anywhere who are interested in this cause.

We plan to continue to explore and develop new ways to volunteer, and new ways to improve communities throughout North America.
