UCT employees get in the back-to-school spirit

The back-to-school season is in full swing, which means that civic groups, companies and local charities are busy spearheading school-supply drives for schools in need. UCT home office employees got in on the action by collecting 20 bags of supplies for students at Livingston Elementary School. Items donated included spiral notebooks, pencils, crayons, calculators, glue, disinfectant wipes and tissues.

“Sending kids back to school is expensive, whether you’re relatively affluent or you’re straddling the poverty line,” said UCT’s Special Projects Coordinator Jessica Myers. “Simple supplies can cost up to several hundred dollars per student. We want all kids to have what they need to be successful in the classroom, so we decided to pick a local school to donate to and make school supplies our late summer collection project – and our employees went above and beyond in their efforts.”

Livingston Elementary School has around 450 students in grades PK-6. It’s a diverse student population that includes students with developmental handicaps and learning disabilities, children with multiple disabilities, and gifted and talented students.

The donated supplies are very much appreciated and will benefit all students, said Livingston Elementary School Principal Stacy Harris-Macarthy. The school has a community supply system, which means all supplies are shared by everyone. This system helps students learn how to share and cooperate; it cuts down on competitiveness and one-upmanship; and it ensures that all students have what they need to get the most out of their school experience.

The school has an ongoing need for a number of different supplies, according to Harris-Macarthy. If you would like to help by collecting and donating supplies, contact Livingston Elementary Vice-Principal Sherra Cook at 614.365.5527 or visit the school’s website at www.livingstones.ccsoh.us.
