Making a Difference Together

The superstar, his favorite girl, a generous gift, and an awesome raffle!

Today’s guest blogger is Mike Hickey, president of the American Special Hockey Association (ASHA). In case you haven’t heard, ASHA is raffling a 2015 Honda Accord donated to the organization by Washington Capitals player Alex Ovechkin. Here’s Mike to tell you about it!

Over the last five years ASHA has benefitted from an amazing partnership with UCT. With the financial and volunteer support of UCT, ASHA has been able to operate and serve our member programs at a much higher level.

For the past month ASHA has received additional support from another source, this one involving a NHL Superstar, a little 10 year old girl with Down syndrome and one of the largest car manufacturers in the world. This opportunity began with a skate put together by the Washington Capitals, their star forward Alex Ovechkin and ASHA.

It was during this event that Ann Schaab of the Washington Ice Dogs asked Ovechkin out on a date for sushi. At first not knowing how to respond, Ovechkin and the Capitals made a plan to bring Ann to a Capitals game, where she would ride to the game with Ovechkin and have a sushi date after the game.

This relationship grew from that night and little Ann has stolen Ovechkin’s heart. At the recent NHL All Star Game, he pleaded to be picked last so he could win a 2015 Honda Accord. When this didn’t happen he tried to win one as the game’s MVP, and again it didn’t go as planned. When Honda found out he wanted the car to donate to Ann and her hockey organization they gave him a car anyway.

With massive media attention and a new car, Ann, her parents, the Washington Ice Dogs and ASHA, along with Ovechkin, decided to raffle the car to raise much-needed funds to help support special hockey players locally and nationally.

This donation was made very much in the same belief that UCT shares with ASHA. When Ovechkin was asked why he was donating the car to ASHA, he responded by saying, “When you have the opportunity to help, you have to do it.” This makes the donation even more special, because it came from the heart and doing something for others.

Please consider buying a raffle ticket to possibly win this new car and help support special hockey players across the United States. This is your opportunity to help so, “you have to do it,” as Alex Ovechkin stated.

You can purchase a raffle ticket online until April 29 at www.specialhockeyraffle.com. The drawing of the winning ticket will be held May 1 at the Gardens Ice House in Laurel, Maryland. You don’t need to be present to win. Arrangements for delivery of the car will be made by ASHA and the winner of the raffle. Thank you for your support!
