UCT members turn out to help Savannah’s Urban Hope

I’m always saying that UCT members are some of the most generous, community-conscious people I know, and don’t you know they always prove me right! In addition to all the good works members do in their local communities year-round, each year in July they make sure we leave our mark on our annual UCT convention host city by supporting the programs and services of a local cause or organization through our convention service project.

This year’s convention was in Savannah, Georgia, and the project was collecting donations and much-needed items like gift cards, scotch tape, wet wipes, Kleenex, sharpies, crayons and pens and pencils for Urban Hope, a nonprofit, nondenominational ministry serving Savannah’s urban inner city children and youth. Members helped support this worthy cause by donating over $4,700 and nearly 10 boxes of items to Urban Hope’s after school and summer programs – our biggest turnout yet! Great job, UCT members!

Like most cities, Savannah has an inner city populated by adults and children who often live lives of deprivation and despair due to poverty and lack of opportunity. And, like most cities, Savannah’s streets can be an especially dangerous place for children and youth who, seeking acceptance, can be easily led into environments of crime and drugs.

Urban Hope believes that when children and youth are made to feel safe within a secure and welcoming environment they can also easily be led into lives of love, hope and success.

Since 2000, Urban Hope’s purpose has been to improve the lives of high risk, underprivileged elementary and middle school aged youth by providing opportunities for spiritual development and life management. The organization does this through free after school and summer programs that focus on tutorial and homework sessions, daily devotionals and Bible study, and academic enrichment activities. Urban Hope’s programs reach over 130 children each year, helping to guide them into lives in which they can excel.

Urban Hope Board Member Cassie Beckwith was ecstatic when she got the news about UCT’s contributions. “This is incredible! Thank you so much for choosing Urban Hope to support. Savannah’s children deserve and are capable of being great people. We’re here to make sure that happens. Generous people like UCT’s members certainly help with that.”

Thank you, thank you, thank you, UCT members for helping this fantastic organization that is doing so much to improve the lives of children and youth in Savannah. You’re wonderful folks who make a big difference. I’m proud to know you!
