UCT steps up to help The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

Posted on Oct 10, 2013 by: David Knapp

On October 12, UCT employees and members will step up to support The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) battle against blood cancers by participating in the society’s annual Light The Night Walk fundraiser. This will be UCT’s 11th consecutive year of supporting this worthwhile cause.

One person in the U.S. is diagnosed with a blood cancer such as leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma nearly every four minutes – and every 29 minutes in Canada. Thanks to dollars raised through The Light The Night Walk, LLS is able to fund treatments that are saving the lives of such patients today.

LLS is making cures happen by providing patient support services, advocacy for lifesaving treatments and the most promising cancer research anywhere. Hundreds of thousands of individuals diagnosed with blood cancer are today living normal, productive lives thanks to LLS and its supporters. And it’s all happening now. Not someday, today.

In addition to the money raised, The Light The Night Walk offers up a casual evening filled with inspiration. The walk is short – just one mile – and is ideal for individuals of all ages and stages of fitness. Teams of walkers carry banners and illuminated balloons – white for survivors, red for supporters and gold in memory of loved ones lost to cancer. There’s music, food and other festivities – and a remembrance ceremony for those lost and a survivor’s ceremony to honor those still with us. For a brief time under the stars, men, women and children come together to form a community of caring and bring light to the dark world of cancer.

UCT has raised a total of nearly $25,000 for LLS over the years. Employees and members raise funds through donations and various events – and turn out to walk year after year. The Central Ohio event raises over $500,000 each year to help fund research for better therapies and cures.

Walks take place in more than 200 communities each fall across North America. It’s not too late to get involved in this essential cause! Click here to find information about a walk in your area in the U.S. or here to find a walk in Canada.
