Important news about changes to the Medal of Honor program due to the Coronavirus

Posted on Mar 24, 2020 by: David Knapp

With the COVID-19 virus making its way across the U.S. and Canada, we want our UCT members to stay in and stay safe and healthy. The last thing we want you to worry about are UCT programs you participate in and how they will be affected by this crisis. Please be assured that we will be adjusting deadlines and requirements over the next few months to accommodate for cancellations and shutdowns.

That said, if your local council is participating in this year’s Medal of Honor program, the 2019-2020 program year still ends March 31 for membership. This deadline won’t change because of all that is happening due to the COVID-19 virus. However, we realize some aspects of the program will be affected by what’s happening, and we intend to make allowances for that. Here are the key points to keep in mind:

  • The deadline date for submitting Medal of Honor books will be extended to June 1 rather than May 1. We know many of our members like to mail their books, and we don’t want anyone risking their health trying to do so. Better yet, email an electronic version of your book to me at lfisher@uct.org. If you have questions about how to do this, please let me know.
  • Any new members that need to be included in the March 31 deadline should be received at the home office in Columbus and at the Calgary office in Canada by no later than Thursday, March 26. If your council needs information on where you presently stand with membership, contact Anita Neal in the U.S. at aneal@uct.org or Joyce Pierre in Canada at jpierre@uct.org.
  • We’re aware that many councils participating in the program will be short on at least one meeting and possibly late on submitting officer reports. There might be councils that had to cancel planned activities as well. We’ll make every effort to adjust the program requirements to accommodate this. Please include a note with your Medal of Honor book letting us know what meetings/planned activities were affected by the crisis and when you think you will elect your officers, and we’ll work with you to make sure you reach the program level you deserve.

Please note that the 2020-2021 Medal of Honor program will probably have to be tweaked due to the virus, so the home office will likely be late in distributing the guidelines. We promise we’ll let you know as soon as the new guidelines are available. In the meantime, thanks so much for your commitment to UCT and your local communities.

Stay safe everyone!
