Resolve to reenergize your UCT local council in 2014: 5 simple suggestions

Posted on Jan 02, 2014 by: David Knapp

Happy New Year! If you’re like me, you’ve probably made a number of resolutions for 2014, and now you’re wondering which ones to get started on first. Here’s an idea: how about putting plans to reenergize your UCT local council at the top of your list? Many members find that making the effort to give their local councils a little boost reignites their own energy and enthusiasm – and often results in others wanting to get involved in UCT! Sound like a good idea? Here are five simple suggestions for getting started:

1. Get involved in your community

You can attract new members and improve your local area through ongoing community service. People want to be part of a group that’s doing good things by giving back. Get your council involved in local community service projects that excite your members or create your own projects that will make a difference where you live. Having a hard time getting started? Reach out to UCT’s Community Outreach Managers Keith Ward and Jen Szymczak. They’re always on hand to help you come up with ideas and walk you through your project from start to finish.

2. Create a UCT local council website

Having a local council website allows your members to keep up to speed with council happenings – and it’s a great way for others in your community to find out who you are, what you do, and when you do it! If you can create a Word document, you can administer a local council website. UCT provides website templates for all local councils, so contact us today, and we’ll help you get started.

3. Get social through Facebook!

There’s really no better way to reach others than through social media. Are you ready to create a social media presence on Facebook and start sharing news about your UCT local council and its projects with others who might want to get involved? We can help you get started by forming your own council Facebook group. It’s easy, it’s fun and the possibilities are nearly endless!

4. Use local media to help create council awareness

Media coverage of your activities and service projects can really help increase local council recognition in your community – and it just might attract new members! Holding a UCT project or event? Make sure it’s covered by engaging your local TV, newspaper and radio outlets through the use of press releases, media alerts and follow-up calls. It’s easier than you might think, and it won’t cost you a penny! Need help? All you have to do is ask!

5. Member resources

The Members area of UCT’s website is a great resource for community service project ideas, information about programs and benefits you can share with potential members, and documents to download to help you get started with media and social media efforts. Just login with your member number from our home page and take a look at what the area has to offer. If you don’t see what you need, let us know.

These are just a few ideas to help you get started on reenergizing your council. You can engage in as many or as few as your council wants to commit to. While it might seem like a daunting undertaking, it doesn’t have to be a chore – and you’ve got 363 days to work on it! We’re here to help! Just email us at memberservices@uct.org, and we’ll be glad to work with you.
