UCT Celebrates 125 Years of Community Service

Posted on Jun 21, 2012 by: UCT

UCT will hold its 125th annual meeting at the end of this month in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.  The organization held its first annual meeting in 1888 and since that first meeting has grown to include members in all 50 states and all 10 provinces of Canada.

UCT is a membership organization with a long history of helping families and local communities.  But we are also a non-profit financial services company.  As a membership organization, UCT members are actively involved in volunteering to improve their local communities.  As a financial services company, we offer insurance products to our members.  These two purposes work hand in hand as the income we generate from our insurance operations helps support the community service work of our members.

In 1888, when UCT was formed, getting insurance wasn’t easy, so people came together to form organizations to provide benefits and financial security to members, their families and their communities. These members basically pooled their money so it was available when a member or his family needed it.  If a traveling salesman was hurt on the road, or if a widow or orphan needed support, this fund covered it. But the members of UCT did more than that. From the beginning, members came together through local councils to improve their communities through fundraising and community service.  We’ve come a long way since 1888, and our insurance products have expanded and evolved and are now similar to those offered by larger commercial insurance carriers.  While our insurance products have changed, our members’ commitment to giving back to local communities has not.

Member-directed community service underwritten by a non-profit financial services company is a business model that benefits everyone. Visit our website to learn more.
